6. Incorporating Wine Bottles into Wine Racks

Pain Point: In my in-store visits, I identified that Sam’s Club has minimal wine categorization compared to other wine/liquor retailers.

  • A lack of categorization can increase confusion, time spent searching, and decrease product satisfaction.

Insights: How Might We better categorize Sam’s Club’s wine displays to help customers find products faster and easier?

  • Restaurants display their wine on wine racks for suggestive selling, decoration, or storage. source

  • Having better categorization can reduce the time spent searching for products. source

  • Better categorization of wine can increase sales. source

Solution: Incorporating Wine bottles into Wine Racks to Showcase both Products

Instead of placing wines in wooden box cases with minimal labeling, Sam’s Club could incorporate their wine bottles inside the shelves to showcase both the wines and the shelves that are up for sale. This way, the customer could have a visual of how the wines could be displayed in their home if they bought the shelf.

Each shelf could be categorized with wines based on the type of wine, brand, region, etc. Categorizing wines in this way could make it easier for a customer to differentiate between different types of wine and easier to navigate for those customers who already know what they are looking for.

Sam’s Club could also offer promotions for buying both as a bundle. For example,  they could offer a discount on either the shelf or a full wine case if they buy both.

Who, What, Wow:

Sam’s Club could benefit from a better-categorized wine section because changing enhancing the visibility of product signage had an average increase in sales and profits of about 10%. source

This showcases a more effective way for Sam's Club to store AND sell wine. People would be able to see how the wine is can be displayed if they buy both.

Results:

This idea did not make it up to the final ranks so I passed it through the 6 thinking hats.

          Quick Overview

Yellow Hat: It would be a good way to showcase both the wines and the shelves.

Black Hat: The shelves would take up extra space since they are no longer placed inside their wine cases.

Green Hat: We could showcase luxury wines on these shelves to promote sales of high-end wine.
